Electrical & Mechanical Works Tenders in Kenya: How Contractors Win Government Contracts in 2026

Complete guide to electrical and mechanical works tenders in Kenya. ERB registration, NCA categories, solar installations, generator supply, and how to win government electrical contracts in 2026.

Electrical and mechanical works represent one of the most technically demanding — and most consistently available — categories of government procurement in Kenya. Every hospital needs electrical maintenance contracts. Every county headquarters has generator servicing requirements. Schools, government offices, and prisons all procure electrical installation and repair work. As Kenya accelerates its solar energy installations across public buildings, the electrical works tender pipeline is expanding significantly.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA, formerly ERC) registers electrical contractors. Category A registration covers up to 33kV systems, Category B covers low voltage systems below 33kV, and Category C covers consumer installations. ERB (Electrical Registration Board) certification for individual electricians is separate. Government tenders for electrical works typically specify the contractor must hold a valid EPRA registration in the appropriate category, with named ERB-registered electricians on the project team.

NCA registration is also required for electrical and mechanical works classified as building services. Electromechanical works — which include HVAC installation, plumbing, elevators, and fire suppression systems — fall under NCA Class for Specialist Works. This dual-registration requirement (EPRA + NCA) is why many small electrical contractors miss out on government tenders: they are ERB-certified but have not bothered with NCA registration, or vice versa. Both are required, and tenders are disqualified for missing either.

Solar installation contracts are the fastest-growing segment of government electrical procurement in Kenya. The Solar Schools Programme, county government solar installations, and public building energy efficiency programmes generate regular solar installation tenders. To win solar government contracts: EPRA Category B+ registration, Solar PV installation certification (from EPRA-approved training), evidence of at least one completed institutional solar installation (with reference letter), and a valid National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) project approval where required.

Generator supply, installation, and maintenance contracts are among the most recurring in government procurement. Every hospital, police station, and government data centre requires backup power — meaning generator maintenance contracts run year-round with annual renewal cycles. Cummins, Perkins, Caterpillar, and Volvo authorised service centres have an advantage in winning OEM-specific maintenance tenders, but independent generator service companies can compete on smaller hospital and county office contracts. TenderAI monitors EPRA, county government portals, and ministry procurement notices daily for electrical and mechanical works opportunities.
